One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will take a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to compensate for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
